Kingman, AZ

Historic and Culture Rich, Kingman and Golden Valley within driving distance

Jump in the car and hit the Mother Road to discover a treasure in the Arizona desert. Kingman is the heart of Route 66, with frequent classic car events, glowing neon signs, and an overall retro vibe that embraces the city’s vibrant past.

In the late 1800s, Kingman sprang to life when the railroad laid its tracks. Mining, ranching, and of course, the railroad encouraged rapid growth. Route 66 followed suit, rolling into town and bringing with it a new era of travel.

Today, Kingman is still the perfect launching point for Route 66 road trips, as well for day trips to bucket-list caliber attractions in northern Arizona, including the Grand Canyon (the Grand Canyon Skywalk is just 70 miles away!).

But there is plenty to see and do in town, as well. The Historic Route 66 Museum and Mohave Museum are all worth a stop. The surrounding Mojave Desert also provides scenic hiking, biking and horseback riding nearby

Wilderness Areas

Located in the Hualapai Mountains, 7,601-foot Wabayuma Peak towers over this Wilderness of massive ridges. Extending out from the peak in a semicircle to the north, south, and west, the ridges plunge almost 5,000 feet in five miles to the desert below. Rocky outcroppings, spires, and crags dominate the canyons between the ridges, and Sonoran and Mojave vegetation dot the desert. This is fine country for extended backpacking or horsepacking trips. Summer temperatures have been known to be bearable, even pleasant at times, allowing year-round Wilderness visitation. More moderate conditions are present between October and May.
